Barista FIRE explained — semi-retirement before full FIRE

Barista FIREis named after the Starbucks barista who works part-time for the healthcare benefits and a modest income — while their investments grow in the background. The concept is simple: you don't need to hit full FIRE to escape the 9-to-5 grind. You just need your investments to cover the portion of your expenses that part-time work can't.

This calculator lets you enter a part-time income figure. It then calculates the portfolio you need to cover only the shortfall between your desired retirement income and what your part-time job provides — meaning you can reach your target much sooner.

Who is Barista FIRE for?

  • People who want to leave a stressful full-time career but aren't ready to stop working entirely
  • Anyone who enjoys part-time or flexible work and wants to reduce financial pressure
  • Those who want employer benefits (pension contributions, health cover) through reduced hours
  • Creatives, freelancers, or consultants who can earn part-time without the 9-to-5 structure

Worked example

Scenario: Desired retirement income £28,000/year. Part-time work will cover £12,000/year. Remaining shortfall: £16,000/year.

Barista FIRE number: £16,000 × 25 = £400,000 (vs £700,000 for full FIRE on £28,000).

Saving: £800/month from age 30 with £20,000 saved. At 7% real return, reach £400,000 in approximately 14–15 years rather than 24 years for full FIRE.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need for Barista FIRE?

Your Barista FIRE number is (desired income − part-time income) × 25. If you want £30,000/year and can earn £12,000 part-time, you need £18,000 × 25 = £450,000 invested — far less than the £750,000 needed for full FIRE at the same income.

What counts as part-time work in Barista FIRE?

Any low-stress work that covers part of your expenses — a few days a week in a job you enjoy, freelance or consulting work, a small business, or any flexible income. The key is that you've removed financial pressure by having your investments cover the shortfall.

Can I access my pension before 57 in Barista FIRE?

In the UK, the minimum pension access age is currently 55 (rising to 57 in 2028). If you semi-retire before 57, you'll need your ISA and investment accounts to bridge until your pension becomes accessible. Many Barista FIRE planners keep their pension for later and live off investments and part-time income in the early years.

What is the difference between Barista FIRE and Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is a milestone — you've saved enough that compound growth alone will reach your FIRE number without further contributions. Barista FIRE is a lifestyle — you semi-retire, work part-time for income to cover daily costs, and let your portfolio cover the rest. You can be at both simultaneously.

Is Barista FIRE realistic in the UK?

Very much so. Part-time work in the UK earning £10,000–£15,000 is below the personal allowance threshold, meaning little or no income tax. Combined with ISA withdrawals (tax-free), Barista FIRE can be extremely tax-efficient in the UK. The State Pension (from age 66+) provides an additional income floor later.
